A broken, or even just a leaking pipe, can cause extensive damage and lead to costly repairs in a short period of time if proper steps are not taken to minimize the damage before permanent repairs can be made. The following tips will help minimize damage and repair costs in the event of a plumbing emergency.
- To minimize damage from a leaking pipe: A leaking pipe hidden within a wall or ceiling will most often be discovered by a spreading stain across the ceiling, down the wall, or by a puddle on the floor. Once a leaking pipe is suspected immediately shut off the water supply to prevent further damage.
- Try to anticipate where water damage will occur to keep it to a minimum. Place a water proof drop cloth and a catch basin on the floor under the leak. If water is leaking from a ceiling light fixture, shut off the electricity and confirm that the electricity is off, then drain the fixture by removing it's cover.
- Poke a hole in the ceiling or remove a section of it to allow any remaining water to drain out. Allow the damaged area to dry thoroughly before restoring electricity to the light fixture.
